NFL Power Rankings

May 27th, 2009 Joe Everett No comments

tombradyNow that the draft is over and the dust has settled, it’s time to take look at each and every NFL team to see how they all stack up against each other.

Some of the more important factors that weigh into the rankings are QB play, offensive line talent, skill position players, and defensive scheme. It’s tough to argue against last year’s champs but I’ve got a few teams that will give the Steelers a run for their money this year.

Posted here for your viewing pleasure, so that you can criticize this on the show…

some text

1. NewEngland Patriots

2008 Record: 11-5 | 2009 Record: 14-2
There is no way in hell that I’m dropping the Patriots off the top of the heap. Bill Belicheat is still the best in the biz, Tom Brady is still one of the best QBs, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and Fred Taylor are all along for the ride. It’s Super Bowl or bust for the Pats again this year.
some text

2. Indianapolis Colts

2008 Record: 12-4 | 2009 Record: 13-3
Very few people realize how many injuries the offensive line went through last year. The group should have a big rebound year and they’ll do a much better job of keeping Peyton Manning out of trouble. Freeny, Mathis, Brackett, and Sanders are still solid on defense.
some text

3. NewYork Giants

2008 Record: 12-4 | 2009 Record: 12-4
I think this is one of the toughest teams in the league. The set the tone on the front line and they play as physical as any team in the league. They’re taking a quantity over quality approach at WR but they’re very well coached and they will be in the playoffs again this year.
some text

4. Pittsburgh Steelers

2008 Record: 12-4 | 2009 Record: 12-4
The Steelers basically kept everybody. What makes this defense work is Casey Hampton & Co up front, James Harrison, LaMarr Woodley, James Farrior, Troy Polomalu, and coordinator Dick LeBeau. Roethlisberger is a quality QB but this team sets the tone with their defense.
some text

5. Baltimore Ravens

2008 Record: 11-5 | 2009 Record: 12-4
Baltimore proved that they could win games by running the ball more than anybody in the league.(590 rushing attmepts) Cam Cameron is a very underrated offensive coordinator and 2nd year QB Flacco is improving with every passing day. Oh yeah, having Ray Lewis around helps to.
some text

6. Carolina Panthers

2008 Record: 12-4 | 2009 Record: 12-4
The return a lot of starters from last year but this ranking is assuming that they keep Julius Peppers happy. They have an amazing running game and a defense that needs to rebound. I like their coaching staff and their chances this coming season.
some text

7. Philadelphia Eagles

2008 Record: 9-6-1 | 2009 Record: 11-5
I really like the additions they have made. Jason Peters & Stacey Andrews are a big upgrade over the aging tackle duo of Runyan & Thomas. Maclin should bring a ton of help in the passing and return game, while McCoy can cut his teeth under the tutelage of Brian Westbrook for a year. Hopefully the defense doesn’t miss Brian Dawkins and Jim Johnson that much because the offense stands to much improved.
some text

8. Tennessee Titans

2008 Record: 13-3 | 2009 Record: 11-5
Once again, this is a team that has a strong offensive line and a veteran defense. The Titans did lose defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and Albert Haynesworth but they will still be a playoff team. Jim Fisher will keep Tennessee focused and playing physical, which is how they win games.
some text

9. San Diego Chargers

2008 Record: 8-8 | 2009 Record: 11-5
The Chargers already have their own division locked down thanks to the ridiculous Cutler trade. Oakland, KansasCity, and Denver are all doormats which gives SanDiego 6 automatic wins. With Shawne Merriman coming back, I expect this team to be a contender in the playoffs.
some text

10. Atlanta Falcons

2008 Record: 11-5 | 2009 Record: 11-5
With another year under his belt, Matt Ryan looks to take the Falcons deeper into the playoffs. The only question is how many more carries until Michael Turner’s wheels fall off? The addition of Gonzalez should really open this offense up.
some text

11. Chicago Bears

2008 Record: 9-7 | 2009 Record: 11-5
Speaking of Jay Cutler, I have the Bears winning the NFC North. The addition of a deep threat like Cutler opens everything up for guys like Matt Forte, Greg Olsen, and Devin Hester. The defense needs to get their act together because the Bears and Cutler will contend this season.
some text

12. Dallas Cowboys

2008 Record: 9-7 | 2009 Record: 10-6
I don’t like Owens leaving but it’s not like this offense is missing play-makers. Witten, Barber, Williams, and Romo are still a great corps of skill position players. They also have a solid O-Line and good depth at RB. The defense is great against the run and still questionable against the pass. Still a playoff contender.
some text

13. Arizona Cardinals

2008 Record: 9-7 | 2009 Record: 10-6
I know they went to the Super Bowl but big frickin deal. I think Fitzgerald is a freak of nature but Arizona still has some holes on defense and on the offensive line. I like the addition of Beanie Wells but I don’t think Arizona will win the divison as easily as they did last year.
some text

14. Minnesota Vikings

2008 Record: 10-6 | 2009 Record: 10-6
They have a major question mark at QB but I still like the acquisition of Sage Rosenfels as a fall back plan. The defense is solid as a rock and they have the best RB in the entire league in Adrian Peterson. I know it’s making some folks sick to see Favre keep coming back out there but he would bring a LOT to this team.
some text

15. Buffalo Bills

2008 Record: 7-9 | 2009 Record: 10-6
Say what you want about Owens but historically he has played some of his best seasons in his 1st year with a new team. Philadelphia, Dallas, and now in Buffalo. They have major question marks on the O-Line but there are still some serviceable free agents to be had. The Bills are improving on defense and will contend for a playoff spot.
some text

16. Miami Dolphins

2008 Record: 11-5 | 2009 Record: 9-7
I don’t think they can win with smoke and mirrors again this year but they are improving a lot with smart moves in free agency and in the draft. Parcells will keep this team winning but I’m thinking they may be on the outside looking in when the playoffs start.
some text

17. NewOrleans Saints

2008 Record: 8-8 | 2009 Record: 8-8
They still stink on defense. Drew Brees’ stats will continue to be amazing thanks to their inability to shut down the pass. The Saints should benefit from having Will Smith and Charles Grant back on defense but they’re going to need some major help from Michael Jenkins from OSU.
some text

18. GreenBay Packers

2008 Record: 6-10 | 2009 Record: 7-9
I hate the fact that this team is switching to a 3-4 defense and I think they’ll miss the playoffs again due to their lack of a pass rush. Expect Aaron Rodgers to have another great year statistically, as he’ll be airing it out again in 2009 playing from behind.
some text

19. Houston Texans

2008 Record: 8-8 | 2009 Record: 8-8
I like the direction Gary Kubiak is taking this team but I’m still skeptical of their 2009 chances of success. The defense is still a work in progress and Matt Schaub needs to prove that he can stay healthy for 16+ games. It’s difficult to rank them high at all, considering they play in the same division as the Colts and Titans.
some text

20. Seattle Seahawks

2008 Record: 4-12 | 2009 Record: 7-9
This team is NOT that bad, they’re just not that good yet. They are returning a lot of players from injury and if Walter Jones, Rob Sims, Patrick Kerny, and Matt Hasselbeck can get healthy then the Seahawks stand to be much improved in 2009. TJ Houshmandzedah should be big for them this year.
some text

21. Washington Redskins

2008 Record: 8-8 | 2009 Record: 7-9
I guess Haynesworth can play WR, QB, and Offensive Tackle because that’s exactly where the Skins are hurting. The Skins will be very tough on defense but their offensive struggles look to continue with next to no improvements made on that side of the ball.
some text

22. Cincinnati Bengals

2008 Record: 4-11-1 | 2009 Record: 6-10
If Carson Palmer’s arm is healed, then this ranking is subject to change but even then, it wouldn’t change much. I still think this team needs to improve a lot on defense and they need one of their young WRs to step up and emerge as a threat opposite Chad 85.
some text

23. Jacksonville Jaguars

2008 Record: 5-11 | 2009 Record: 6-10
I’m still skeptical of the chemistry going on in the Jacksonville locker room. I’m still of the thinking that they would have fired Jack DelRio if his contract wasn’t such a liability to swallow. It remains to be seen how the completely revamped WR corps is going to perform. Once again, this division belongs to the Colts.
some text

24. NewYork Jets

2008 Record: 9-7 | 2009 Record: 6-10
Rex Ryan can’t play QB, so it looks like the Jets are going to be in trouble. As unpopular as it is to say, I think they’ll miss Brett Favre more than they realize. Unfortunately for the Jets, it’s going to get worse before it gets better.
some text

25. SanFrancisco 49ers

2008 Record: 7-9 | 2009 Record: 6-10
Shaun Hill and Alex Smith both suck which makes it extremely difficult for me to agree with the folks who believe San Francisco is going to be the surprise team of the year. Their defense is still in trouble and they have little to nothing in the WR corps to compliment Frank Gore.
some text

26. KansasCity Chiefs

2008 Record: 2-14 | 2009 Record: 5-11
There are still a lot of question marks on this team but I could see them rising above and out of the league cellar. Scott Pioli has made some bold moves already and Matt Cassel will be counted on to improve the team’s record. They are a work in progress but they have some pieces in place to succeed.
some text

27. TampaBay Buccaneers

2008 Record: 9-7 | 2009 Record: 4-12
A new Coach, a new QB, and a new Defensive Coordinator can’t be a good thing for Tampa’s playoff hopes. Their defense is approaching ancient status and the only redeeming quality about this team is the tremendous talent level of their offensive line.
some text

28. Cleveland Browns

2008 Record: 4-12 | 2009 Record: 4-12
If it’s Bradie Quinn, Derrick Anderson, or Ken Dorsey, the Browns defense still stinks and their struggles on the right side of the O-Line will prevent them from winning games. Mangenius could be in for very trying season with the Browns in 2009.
some text

29. Oakland Raiders

2008 Record: 5-11 | 2009 Record: 4-12
The only way that Oakland can win games will be if FatMarcus Russell gets benched in favor of Jeff Garcia. Garcia might be able to manufacture some wins instead of Russell being a total and complete liability to the team. Hopefully Tom Cable and Al Davis are reading the blog.
some text

30. St.Louis Rams

2008 Record: 2-14 | 2009 Record: 3-13
The Rams are now one of the youngest teams in the entire league and it looks like their regular season record will reflect that. The defense is still suspect and the offensive line needs to stay healthy for once to open up holes for Steven Jackson. They’ll continue to lose games but perhaps Steve Spagnuolo can change the culture there.
some text

31. Denver Broncos

2008 Record: 8-8 | 2009 Record: 2-14
I told you all that Josh McDaniels was a gigantor retard and I also said he would destroy the Broncos’ chances of winning games. Well, he is now going to go out and prove it. With the loss of Cutler, he turned Denver into a rebuilding project instead of a playoff team. Instead of being a game away from the playoffs, Denver will more than likely be a game away from last place.
some text

32. Detroit Lions

2008 Record: 0-16 | 2009 Record: 2-14
While it’s true that there’s no where else to go but up, the Lions don’t have that much talent aside from Calvin Johnson to make a significant improvement. It’s to be hoped that Matt Stafford will eventually be a leader on the field but it looks like he might be holding a clipboard while Culpepper goes out and loses more games.

Fantasy Football – Trading Places

May 20th, 2009 Joe Everett No comments

owensbillsJay Cutler is on his way to Chicago, Terrell Owens is keeping it real in Buffalo, and TJ Who’s Your Mamma is headed West to help Seattle return to glory. It’s The Same Old Fantasy Football Faces In New NFL Places.

Part of success in Fantasy Football is following league trends and transactions. A lot of players change teams every year but knowing the biggest impact players and knowing how they’ll improve, compliment, or diminish the performance of those around them is what will take you to the top.

It’s important to take a look at the impact of each of these players changing teams and how they’ll effect your fantasy league this year. This is the top 20+ players that have changed teams and how they rank amongst the other free agents and traded players. I have only one question for you…..

Do You Have Your Pop Corn Ready!?!?!?

some text

1. QB Jay Cutler, Chicago(DEN)

Height: 6-3 | Weight: 233 | Age: 26
Jay Cutler is a rare case of a franchise QB in his prime leaving a team via trade. Cutler is a supremely talented passer who will elevate the performance of Chicago’s passing attack and help facilitate an even more effective ground game. The Bears sold the farm but they certainly got a good one here. Draft him outside the top-10 of QBs and expect good but not great numbers.
some text

2. WR Terrell Owens, Buffalo(DAL)

Height: 6-3 | Weight: 218 | Age: 35
Historically Owens has done well in his first year with a new team. He delivered the goods in Philly and Dallas, so I expect him to be the focal point of the Bills passing attack and he’ll certainly get help from Lee Evans, Marshawn Lynch, and rookie TE Shawn Nelson from Southern Mississippi. Talk him down pre-draft and let him slide to you, as I expect him to remain a fixture in the top-10 of WRs in PPR leagues.
some text

3. WR TJ Houshmandzadeh, Seattle(CIN)

Height: 6-1 | Weight: 199 | Age: 31
Housh-aMa-Zilly is no longer casting a huge shadow over Chad Johnson. Ooops, or did I mean to say it that way? Seriously Folks, Houshmandzadeh is a total pro and he will be the main wide receiver in the Seahawks passing attack. If Tim Hasselbeck’s brother can stay healthy for the whole season, that will actually carry some serious fantasy consequences. Housh will continue to be a solid option in PPR leagues and an every week starter.
some text

4. QB Kyle Orton, Denver(CHI)

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 217 | Age: 26
As much as I don’t like Orton and I don’t think he presents a reliable threat to defenses, he’s still in a great situation. Orton has two phenoms playing WR in Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal. The Broncos offensive line is in great shape and the Broncos are deep at tight end. I expect Orton to be on the outside looking in on the top-10 of QBs this year. I would hope to draft him much later than that but he should be in store for some good game since Denver’s defense is still one of the worst in the league until further notice.
some text

5. TE Tony Gonzalez, Atlanta(KCC)

Height: 6-5 | Weight: 251 | Age: 33
Gonzo turned in one of his best seasons last year and it’s almost impossible to see him duplicating that this year but he’s certainly in a much improved situation. Atlanta is a playoff team, they have a solid ground game, Roddy White is an established WR, and the Falcons need a tight end. This couldn’t be a better fit. I expect Gonzo to remain in the top-3 of TEs and turn in another great season.
some text

6. RB Derrick Ward, Tampa Bay(NYG)

Height: 5-11 | Weight: 228 | Age: 28
This guy is like the energizer bunny when he gets the ball. His competitiveness shows up on the field and he’s an excellent receiver in the flats. Ward enters a semi-crowded backfield though with the likes of Earnest Graham and Cadillac Williams. The Bucs definitely brought him into town to get a lot of carries, so you’ve got to believe that he’s going to be on the field the most. I’d take a chance on Ward after the run on RB2s is almost over, meaning have a starter or two already in place at RB if you’re drafting him.
some text

7. QB Matt Cassel, Kansas City(NEP)

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 230 | Age: 26
Scott Mitchell part II or Brett Favre part II? I’m being a bit more skeptical of the situation, seeing as the Chiefs have a sub-par offensive line. The Chiefs also don’t have Randy Moss or Wes Welker, no offense to my boy Dwayne “The Show” Bowe. I’m not a big fan of Tony Gonzalez leaving town but the fact that the Kansas City defense will continue to struggle puts Cassel in a lot of passing situations. I’m leaving him inside my top-20 but not by much.
some text

8. WR Torry Holt, Jacksonville(STL)

Height: 6-0 | Weight: 190 | Age: 32
Old Man Holt is supposedly looking good in Jags camp and he’s the clear cut number option on the depth chart. Jacksonville appears to be sweeping the slate clean at WR and David Garrard’s main option will be the former Ram. Holt already stands to be a far superior player than either Matt Jones, Reggie Williams, or Jerry Porter who were all released from the team this off-season. I expect Holt to turn in another 1,000 yard season with roughly 70 receptions on the year. Solid WR3/Fringe WR2.
some text

9. QB Jet Favre, Vikings(Brets)

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 222 | Age: 39
I seriously can’t help myself because I am not counting out Jet Favre until the first snap of the regular season for the Vikings with some other QB at center. When(IF) Favre signs with the Vikings, he’ll immediately be in a great situation with a strong running game and a serious vertical threat in Berrian. I don’t see Favre rocking the fantasy world with amazing stats but he’ll definitely have a game or two that he absolutely blows up ala the Cardinals game last year. Good QB2.
some text

10. TE Kellen Winslow, Tampa Bay(CLE)

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 250 | Age: 25
Show Me The Money!!! You go Kellen! I’m still amazed that any team seriously gave this kid with the McGyver Knee that big of a contract but the Bucs showed Kellen the love and now he enters a situation where he’ll be one one of, if not the primary passing threat in the offense with the new QB regime. I still think that Leftwich will start the season but regardless who is under center, look for Winslow to get plenty of targets in this offense. Still a legit TE1 but not as much upside playing inferior QBs.
some text

11. RB Fred Taylor, New England(JAX)

Height: 6-1 | Weight: 228 | Age: 33
New England loves to snag these grizzled vets that can jump right into their system and play. Freddy-T certainly fits the bill but the biggest question mark here is the 5-Million RBs already in camp. Sammy Morris, Kevin Faluk, Laurence Maroney, BenJarvisNeedsaNickName, and now Fred Taylor. Having said that, I wouldn’t be surprised if Belicheat gave Taylor 250 carries this year. There’s still gas left in the tank but it’s never fun trying to predict exactly what the Patriots will do. RB4 with upside.
some text

12. WR Laveranues Coles, Cincinnati(NYJ)

Height: 5-11 | Weight: 193 | Age: 31
Don’t look now but Coles is now with the best QB he’s ever had the chance to play with. Carson Palmer loved Houshmandzedah’s route running ability and that’s exactly what Coles brings to the table. He’s a little long in the tooth but he should prove to be a good compliment to the OchoCinco and Chris Henry. The Bengals WR corps is pretty crowded but Coles has a great shot at being the #2 this season, making him a solid #3 WR in fantasy leagues.
some text

13. RB Edgerin James, Unkown(ARI)

Height: 6-0 | Weight: 219 | Age: 30
I honestly think that Edge could end up in Seattle, especially with the lack of depth and talent over there. Neither Julius Jones, Justin Forsett, or TJ Duckett are capable of handling all the carries. Edge should also get interest from New Orleans. Point being he’s on the list due to the fact that he can still help an NFL team and he can still factor into your fantasy season. Could be a RB 3 in the right situation.
some text

14. WR Joey Galloway, New England(TBB)

Height: 5-11 | Weight: 197 | Age: 37
I’ve got my doubts about Galloway this year because there’s just no way he can still keep his speed up this late in the game. He’s proven me wrong plenty of times before, so why doubt him now? Randy Moss and Wes Welker are still the favorite targets of Mr Brady and even in a complimentary role, Galloway is still mostly a deep threat opposite Moss. I’m thinking WR3 at best with not a lot of upside.
some text

15. RB Correll Buckhalter, Denver(PHI)

Height: 6-0 | Weight: 217 | Age: 30
I could have listed LaMont Jordan here as well but I think Buckhalter has the early nod to be Knowshon Moreno’s backup in Denver. He’s got the best receiving ability and his knowledge of the west coast offense will prove helpful in McDaniels system which has similarities. Good Handcuff to Moreno.
some text

16. WR Laurent Robinson, St. Louis(ATL)

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 194 | Age: 23
I really thought this kid would start to break out with Matt Ryan in Atlanta last year but injuries and Harry Douglas’ emergence didn’t help at all. The Rams think enough of Robinson to have worked a deal out to get him into camp and compete for a starting spot opposite Donnie Avery. I still think Robinson has a lot of upside and could sieze what looks to be a golden opportunity. Late Round Gem w/ Upside.
some text

17. WR Ronald Curry, Detroit(OAK)

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 210 | Age: 29
I’m still not turning in my “Ronald Curry Fan Club” Badge because I STILL believe. It’s just the fact that Oakland’s passing game has been a joke for years now and Curry hasn’t had a decent QB to work with. Curry does have some familiarity with Daunte Culpepper and working opposite Calvin Johnson certainly should allow some single coverage. The only obstacles in Curry’s way is Bryant Johnson and rookie Derrick Williams from Penn State. Monitor Curry in the pre-season to see if he can be a late round pick that brings value each week.
some text

18. WR Nate Washington, Tennessee(PIT)

Height: 6-1 | Weight: 185 | Age: 25
Washington was one of the first free agents to sign this off-season. The Titans, however, are not known for airing the ball out but they definitely wanted to improve their WR corps. Washington enters a crowded depth chart with last year’s #1 Justin Gage, rookie 1st rounder Kenny Britt, Justin McCarriens, and Lavelle Hawkins. Washington is more of a deep threat but it remains to be seen if he’s anything more than that. WR4 with no upside.
some text

19. QB Byron Leftwich, Tampa Bay(PIT)

Height: 6-5 | Weight: 250 | Age: 29
Don’t call me Bryon but Leftwich may be the opening day starter for the Buccaneers, regardless of what rookie QB Josh Freeman seems to think. Leftwich is the best QB in West Florida by a mile and while he’s not the best QB in the wolrd, the Bucs offense isn’t that shabby when you look at all the pieces. Ward & Graham should provide a good ground game, the offensive line is in very good shape, and Antonio Bryant is coming off of a stellar year at WR. Combine all that with acquisition of Kellen Winslow and Leftwich could be looking at a nice start to the ‘09 season. Late Round Pick with Good Upside.
some text

20. WR Bobby Engram, Kansas City(SEA)

Height: 5-10 | Weight: 192 | Age: 36
Talk about guys that just keep on playing forever… Engram had another reliable season last year and will probably provide some value in larger PPR leagues but it’s a mystery how the new team will be run. My thinking is that they’ll air the ball out much more than the previous regime and Engram could fit into 2 and 3 WR formations right off the bat. WR 4 with limited upside.
some text

21. Brian Leonard, Cincinnati(STL)

Height: 6-1 | Weight: 229 | Age: 25
Keep your eyes peeled after your drafts are concluded for this kid on the waiver wire unless you’re in REALLY deep fantasy leagues. Leonard is a very talented and versatile RB that will find a way to get on the field, since he’s only behind Cedric Benson. Rookie Bernard Scott will factor into the mix but Leonard’s experience will help him this year. Waiver Material Right Now.
some text

22. Sage Rosenfels, Minnesota(HOU)

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 224 | Age: 31
This ranking and placement is all contingent on Jet Favre and his situation with the Vikings. Sage Rosenfels is definitely the favorite to back Favre up and he’ll be the starter if Favre is not signed. The biggest plus for Rosenfels right now is that he’s already taking first and second team reps while Favre rides his tractor in his Wrangler jeans. Draft Sage as a QB2 with tremendous upside if Favre doesn’t un-retire.
some text

23. QB Jeff Garcia, Oakland(TBB)

Height: 6-1 | Weight: 205 | Age: 39
The Bottom Line = JaMarcus Russell sucks. If Russell continues to under-perform, then it’s not out of the question that Garcia would come in and run the team until the rookie figures out how to tie his own shoes. I think Russell is a huge joke of a QB and Garcia would give the Raiders the best chance they’ve had since the Gannon years at a winning record. Keep your ears to the ground during the pre-season and don’t draft Garcia, just be ready to scoop him off the waiver wire.

IDP Rookie Top-50 Released!!!

May 20th, 2009 Joe Everett No comments

maualugaIDP(Independant Defensive Players) aren’t everybody’s favorite way to play fantasy football but I’ve been hooked on IDP since I first started playing it.

One of the most difficult things to try and gauge during the off-season is the impact the that the rookie class will have on the defensive side of the ball. Many Leagues have rookie only dynasty drafts and we’re going to list our top-50 defensive players for your fantasy league this year.

Posted here for mass scrutiny on the show!!!

1. LB James Laurinaitis, St.Louis – Landed in a great spot and should prove to be an instant leader of the defense.
2. LB Rey Maualuga, Cincinnati – He is the MLB of the future but it might take a little longer than originally expected.
3. LB Aaron Curry, Seattle – Probably the safest IDP pick but his initial value will be limited by Hill and Tatupu. Great Long term prospect.
4. S William Moore, Atlanta – Very likely to start the season at the strong safety spot. Big time hitter who could rack up the tackles.
5. S Louis Delmas, Detroit – Detroit losing a ton of games = Delmas on the field all day. Should be a fixture from day one.
6. LB Brian Cushing, Houston – Might be stuck on the strong side for a while but he won’t leave the field that often.
7. LB DeAndre Levy, Detroit – He really has a legit shot at being the MLB for one of the biggest losers in the league.
8. LB Clint Sintim, NewYork(G) – I think the G-Men got a quality player from a solid program who will start a lot of games in this league.
9. S Patrick Chung, NewEngland – Might not start right off but he’s definitely in the teams long term plans.
10. DE Aaron Maybin, Buffalo – Maybin has a tremendous first step and I think he could be one of the best pass rushers in this draft.
11. DE Michael Johnson, Cincinnati – OK, so he was an underachiever in college. Big deal, the Bengals will have this kid on the field a ton.
12. DE Brian Orakpo, Washington – If he’s designated as a LB, then drop him down the list but as a DE, Orakpo will produce solid fantasy numbers.
13. OLB Clay Matthews, GreenBay – He’s definitely going to get his playing time but don’t reach for him.
14. LB Gerald McRath, Tennessee – Has a good shot at cracking the starting lineup a early as next year. McRath has great potential at the weakside.
15. DE Connor Barwin, Houston – One of the most interesting prospects in the draft. This converted TE could be a pass rushing specialist.
16. OLB Larry English, SanDiego – He’ll be drafted higher than this but I’m not sold yet on English as a top-10 pick.
17. DE Everette Brown, Carolina – I really thought he’d get drafted by a 3-4 team but Brown’s still a good prospect from the DE spot.
18. LB Jason Williams, Dallas – He will have to wait his turn but his ability on the inside is intriguing.
19. CB Malcolm Jenkins, NewOrleans – Sure fire starter right now. NewOrleans might play him at safety as well.
20. S Mike Mitchell, Oakland – Maybe a reach for a the Raiders but not in your fantasy league. Has to get on the field eventually to justify the pick.
21. DE Robert Ayers, Denver – He’ll certainly get his chances but I don’t like him in the system. Will be a value if he retains his “DE” designation however.
22. LB Scott McKillop, SanFrancisco – Over achiever will claim a starting role sooner rather than later. Coaches will love his attitude.
23. DE Lawrence Sidbury, Atlanta – Interesting situation and Sidbury is a pass rushing phenom. He could fit really well in a situational role.
24. CB Vontae Davis, Miami – Miami may have drafted it’s cornerbacks of the future in Smith and Davis. Vernon’s little brother is a hell of an athlete.
25. DE Paul Kruger, Baltimore – I think Kruger could be a very special player. His versatility and high motor will get him on the field fast.
26. DT Jarron Gilbert, Chicago – Bears’ system fits him well. He will be able to produce stats in Chicago’s defensive front.
27. LB Marcus Freeman, Chicago – I think he’ll eventually claim one of the starting spots and could stick for a while in the league.
28. OLB Cody Brown, Arizona – Should be a starter very soon, as he’s a good fit for the Cards’ 3-4 defense.
29. LB David Veikune, Cleveland – Continues to climb up my board with recent minicamp reports. Interesting player.
30. LB Jasper Brinkley, Minnesota – Brinkley has long term potential and he might already be the 2nd best MLB in camp.
31. DT B.J. Raji, GreenBay – Mobile, Agile, Hostile. Raji has a lot of upside in the Packers new 3-4 defense.
32. CB Alphonso Smith, Denver – Management really likes this kid, otherwise they wouldn’t have traded away next year’s 1st round pick, which WILL be a top-5 selection.
33. LB Stephen Hodge, Dallas – Good athlete. Very intsinctive player who will be tried out at safety also.
34. LB Jason Phillips, Baltimore – Classic try hard, over-achiever will compete with Travares Gooden to get some playing time in year one.
35. CB Darius Butler, New England – Butler has a great shot at being a long time starter for the Pats in about a year.
36. CB Sean Smith, Miami – I think this kid could eventually turn into the best defensive back in this draft class. Snag him late.
37. S Michael Hamlin, Dallas – The Cowboys are obviously very high on Hamlin and he could be in their long-term plans.
38. S Chip Vaughn, NewOrleans – He could eventually claim one of the future safety spots if all goes well. Monitor closely.
39. CB Jairus Byrd, Buffalo – Coaches son who understands the game. Will get on the field eventually on most passing downs.
40. ILB Kaluka Maiava, Cleveland – His best chance I think will be inside but the coaching staff likes him. Long Term guy.
41. DT Peria Jerry, Atlanta – Could be special and will be on the field from day one. Really depends on how they use him.
42. DE Alex Magee, KansasCity – Should be used all over the field. Stands to have better numbers than fellow rookie Jackson.
43. LB Darry Beckwith, SanDiego – I like his opportunity in SanDiego but he’s not a guarantee to get PT right away.
44. OLB Zack Follett, Detroit – Follett is a gamer and must be included as a long term prospect on a very bad team.
45. CB Victor Harris, Philadelphia – “Macho” Harris has a chance to get on the field fast with his hitting ability and football IQ.
46. ILB Dannell Ellerbe, Baltimore – A long shot to compete for time behind Ray-Ray, Gooden, and Phillips. Ellerbe is an amazing athlete.
47. CB D.J. Moore, Chicago – Could find himself in nickel and dime packages eventually. The Bears need somebody to step up.
48. CB Asher Allen, Minnesota – Should compete right away with Karl Paymah and Benny Sapp for a spot in the dime package.
49. DE Tyson Jackson, Kansas City – I see him as nothing more than a plugger who will clog up space and eat up blockers for the KC Linebackers.
50. LB Tyrone McKenzie, NewEngland – A torn ACL in camp crushes his ‘09 season. Long Term Project.

Childs Play For Chucky on MNF

May 19th, 2009 Joe Everett No comments

gruden1Folks, Chucky is coming to the Monday Night booth to join Tirico and Jaws. Gruden’s hire marks the end of Tony Kornheiser’s tenure on MNF and it’s not soon enough in my opinion.

“This is a tremendous opportunity and I am very excited to be associated with ESPN and Monday Night Football,” Gruden said. “To join Mike and Jaws in the booth and to work alongside this top-notch team is going to be a real thrill.”

Kornheiser apparently decided to step down after three years as a MNF analyst, citing his fear of flying. Norby Williamson, ESPN’s executive vice president of production, emphasized it was Kornheiser’s choice to leave and said MNF did not fire the PTI personality. “We were talking to Jon, he was out there,” Williamson said. “When Tony made his decision, Jon was the guy.”

Yeah right, and I’m sure it has nothing to do with the fact that Kornheiser falls asleep after the middle of the 3rd quarter or the fact that he would openly explain to a live audience that he was bored, tired, or down right uninterested. Nice cover espn… you had me fooled the whole time.

I really like the hire for a few reasons… Gruden has ties all throughout the league, coming from the Holmgren coaching tree. The last SuperBowl Winning Coach to cover games on MNF didn’t do too bad a job(John Madden). He’ll also bring a very unique perspective to the coverage as far as terminology and a more expansive view of the game.

Plus, you can just tell that Grudes is a football maniac like the rest of us clowns. :P

Matt Millen Back on TV w/ ESPN

May 13th, 2009 Joe Everett No comments

matt-millenWhat I feard most this off-season has happened, Matt Millen is going to be on TV a LOT.

ESPN made official the hire of former Lions president Matt Millen, the architect of the league’s only 0-16 season. He will be joining the network as an NFL and College Football Analyst.

Apparently the biggest idiot in the world will be appearing on several different ESPN programs, as well as covering college games live. He is scheduled to start some time in August.

Millen was a highly successful broadcaster before he became the Lions president in 2001. The Lions have gone 31-97 since then and the franchise has been a text book example of “how NOT to do it” during that span.

Millen reappeared on NBC during the playoffs last year and it seemed to be a precursor to him reappearing on television again. It’s just such a huge disappointment that a person can get a job talking about football when it’s proven that they’re a complete fraud.

Good Luck trying to win a draft argument on set Millen. You’re opposition will have unlimited ammunition in any NFL draft debate. “What are you gonna do Matt? Draft another wide receiver?” Personally, I’ll be waiting for that one because it’s inevitable.

Rookie Top-50 Released (Dynasty Rankings)

May 6th, 2009 Joe Everett 2 comments

knowshonIt’s time to break down the rookie ranks and find out which players are going to take your fantasy roster to the top.

1. Knowshon Moreno, RB(DEN) – Clear-cut starter who is already a favorite of the coaching staff.
2. Chris Wells, RB(ARI) – The coaching staff wants to run the ball more and Wells could be the key.
3. Donald Brown, RB(IND) – Should start out in a share-carry but will produce right away.
4. LeSean McCoy, RB(PHI) – Westy’s successor won’t get a ton of touches right off but he’s next.
5. Michael Crabtree, WR(SFO) – I really hope a quality QB can get into the lineup soon
6. Hakeem Nicks, WR(NYG) – Looks to be the starter opposite Steve Smith right out of the gates.
7. Jeremy Maclin, WR(PHI) – Great offense for Maclin to land in. Extra points for return game.
8. Shonn Greene, RB(NYJ) – The Jets traded up for a reason, Greene’s time is coming sooner rather than later.
9. Matthew Stafford, QB(DET) – I know Detroit is hopeless but he’ll be playing from behind and he’s got Megatron.
10. Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR(OAK) – If JaMarcus Russell’s light ever turns on, DHB could be a stud fantasy WR.
11. Mark Sanchez, QB(NYJ) – Will be the starter and could be a solid option in a year or two.
12. Kenny Britt, WR(TEN) – My favorite WR is stuck in a running offense…. I still like him a LOT.
13. Brian Robiskie, WR(CLE) – The Browns really like this kid and he’s certainly got a clear path to start.
14. Jarett Dillard, WR(JAX) – Great hands, great leaper, good route runner.
15. Austin Collie, WR(IND) – Smart player has been called a Stokely clone.
16. Juaquin Iglesias, WR(CHI) – He is likely to develop into Cutler’s favorite target if all goes well.
17. Percy Harvin, WR(MIN) – I’m not that high on this kid since he’s an idiot but he could make an impact.
18. Mike Thomas, WR(JAX) – Great player who has a good shot at contributing right away.
19. Travis Beckum, TE(NYG) – Great athlete who is a more natural pass catcher than Kevin Boss.
20. Brandon Pettigrew, TE(DET) – Pettigrew will be on the field all day and should provide decent numbers.
21. Josh Freeman, QB(TBB) – I’m not a fan of this kid but he’s going to have all the opportunity in the world.
22. Shawn Nelson, TE(BUF) – Solid player who could contribute right away in the new passing game.
23. Brandon Tate, WR(NEP) – Phenom who is recovering from knee surgery. Worthy of sitting on.
24. Andre Brown, RB(NYG) – Will compete for touches with his versatility.
25. Jared Cook , TE(TEN) – Freak of nature will eventually become a weapon.
26. Rashad Jennings, RB(JAX) – I’m a big fan of this kid and he’s in an offense that likes to run the ball.
27. Ramses Barden, WR(NYG) – Intriguing measurables and a chance at playing time.
28. Chase Coffman, TE(CIN) – Coffman is a good receiver and should be on the field early.
29. Cornelius Ingram, TE(PHI) – I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t start right away.
30. Gartrell Johnson, RB(SD) – Has a shot to stick around in the SanDiego back field.
31. James Casey, TE(HOU) – Casey is a tremendous athlete in a crowded situation.
32. Johnny Knox, WR(CHI) – Could run Rashied Davis out of town… literally.
33. James Davis, RB(CLE) – Looks to be high on the depth chart already.
34. Bernard Scott, RB(CIN) – Great opportunity for a tough player.
35. Mike Wallace, WR(PIT) – A great player that Pittsburgh will likely sit on for a year or two.
36. Cedric Peerman, RB(BAL) – Tremendous athlete enters a crowded backfield
37. Mike Goodson, RB(CAR) – A poor man’s Reggie Bush will struggle to get on the field.
38. Mohamed Massaquoi, WR(CLE) – Coaching staff loves his upside.
39. Pat White, WR(MIA) – He’ll get on the field in some capacity but probably not QB.
40. Glen Coffee, RB(SF) – SanFran must love this kid if they reached for him like that.
41. Javon Ringer, RB(TEN) – Chris Henry is on his way out and White’s status isn’t certain either.
42. Brooks Foster, WR(STL) – Great athlete who could surprise.
43. Nate Davis, QB(SFO) – Should compete for a starting spot in a year or two.
44. Derrick Williams, WR(DET) – Goes to a team that will pass a lot.
45. Kory Sheets, RB(SFO) – Sheets is my dark horse to surprise in camp and beat out Coffee for the #2 spot.
46. Patrick Turner, WR(MIA) – Has great size and Miami likes him. Boom/Bust Player.
47. Rhett Bomar, QB(NYG) – Worthy of hanging on to in a deep dynasty.
48. Deon Butler, WR(SEA) – Seattle has a lot of receivers so Butler will take a year or two.
49. Jeremiah Johnson, RB(HOU) – Underrated player who could compete for the #2 spot.
50. Louis Murphy, WR(OAK) – A bit of a mystery here on a bad offense.
