staffordNFL MOCK DRAFT

There are a ton of mock drafts out there but this is the one that will have some strange similarities to the real deal….

I see more than 5 Offensive Tackles and 5 Wide Receivers getting drafted in the first round alone.  I also like the depth at DE/OLB, as there are a ton of options available for each team’s differing schemes/styles.  I think a lot of folks will underestimate how much talent is in this year’s WR crop and there are also a few top shelf centers that will be selected on the first day.

(Last Update – April 25th, 2009)

some text 1. Detroit Lions
Stafford, Matthew – QB – Georgia
The Lions are desperate to make some kind of impact here and with the success of last year’s two first round QBs, who can blame them for taking Stafford.
some text 2. St.Louis Rams
Jason Smith – OT – Baylor
The Rams need a dominating presence at the OT position and Smith will be their selection. Most scouts are convinced that since Smith is more agressive than Monroe that he’s the better player, I’m not so sure though.
some text 3. KansasCity Chiefs
Curry, Aaron – OLB – Wake Forest
The Chiefs need help in all facets of the game but their defense is in need of multiple positions with their expected move to the 3-4 defense.
some text 4. Seattle Seahawks
Sanchez, Mark – QB – USC
The Seahawks need to get help on offense and if they don’t take Sanchez then they’ll certainly be smart to trade the pick because this is where Sanchez is going.
some text 5. Cleveland Browns
Crabtree, Michael – WR – Texas Tech
The Browns need playmakers on the offensive side and they’ll be luckly to have a blue chipper like Crabtree fall in their laps.
some text 6. Cininnati Bengals
Raji, BJ – DT – Boston College
The Bengals have been searching for pass rushers and they are in need of a spark on defense. Raji certainly could provide that and I doubt the drug allegations will drop his stock that much.
some text 7. Oakland Raiders
Maclin, Jeremy – WR – Missouri
Al Davis loves the playmakers with top end speed and explosiveness. Maclin brings both plus dynamic kick return ability.
some text 8. Jacksonville Jaguars
Monroe, Eugene – OL – Virginia
Jacksonville needs more depth on the offensive line and a widereceiver. I previously had Sanchez selected here and traded but it looks as if the hype machine will elevate the Trojan QB’s stock even further.
some text 9. GreenBay Packers
Orakpo, Brain – DE – Texas
Green Bay desperately needs some new players to help the transition of th 3-4 defense. Orakpo can lineup either at DE or OLB and with the rumors that Kampmann will be traded, this makes sense.
some text 10. SanFrancisco 49ers
Brown, Everette – DE – Florida State
The 49ers snag the best player on their board and are happy to do so at #10. Brown will help bring some ressure on the opposite side of the Lawson experiment.
some text 11. Buffalo Bills
Maybin, Aaron – DE – Penn State
The Bills needs a pass rusher since neither Schobel or Kelsay aren’t getting it done. Maybin is a freak of nature when it comes to a first step, he’s a boom or bust type but the Bills are desperate for a pass rush.
some text 12. Denver Broncos
Jackson, Tyson – DE – LSU
Tyson Jackson fills a need for the Broncos. They need some youth on the front line and some versatility. Jackson can start right away and play multiple positions on the line.
some text 13. Washington Redskins
Smith, Andre – OL – Alabama
Washington needs to get younger on both front lines. Smith is a gamble but the Skins aren’t afraid of rolling the dice if it means that they can get a steal in the draft.
some text 14. NewOrleans Saints
Jenkins, Malcolm – CB – Ohio State
The Saints need help in the secondary in the worst way. Jenkins is one of the more solid selections form this year’s class of defensive backs.
some text 15. Houston Texans
Davis, Vontae – CB – Illinois
The Texans will reach on Davis in the hopes of landing some consistency in the defensive backfield.
some text 16. SanDiego Chargers
Moreno, Knowshon – RB – Georgia
The Chargers might take a long hard look at Maualuga here but will settle for the best player on the board in Moreno. He should be a good selection with Tomlinson likely in his last year with the team.
some text 17. NewYork Jets
Wells, Chris – RB – Ohio State
Lord knows WHAT Little Joshie McCheese will do with his Grublets but we sure could use a young ball-carrier since our entire group is a bunch of slugs except for Torain.
some text 18. Denver Broncos
Maualuga, Rey – ILB – USC
I had Maualuga going to the Broncos earlier but I could see him slip further down the draftboard than he should. Maualuga is a hitting machine and the Broncos would do well to add another tackler
some text 19. TampaBay Buccaneers
Jerry, Peria – DT – Mississippi
Tampa reaches but gets a player that fits their scheme perfectly. Jerry fits into the first round but maybe not this high. Tampa’s defense certainly can use some youth.
some text 20. Detroit Lions
Laurinaitis, James – ILB – Ohio State
Detroit wants more playmakers on defense and Laurinaitis is simply too good to pass up at #20. He brings a lot of experience at a high level of college play and should be a leader on the field.
some text 21. Philadelphia Eagles
Johnson, Michael – DE – Georgia Tech
Philly is always on the lookout for defensive line help and Johnson is just the gamble they want to take in the event that the YellowJacket turns out to be a better pro than collegiate player.
some text 22. Minnesota Vikings
Heyward-Bey, Darrius – WR – Maryland
The Vikes will grab the workout warrior ala Troy Williamson but this time it will be a homerun. The Maryland product has superior speed and tremendous leaping ability.
some text 23. NewEngland Patriots
Cushing, Brian – OLB – USC
The Pats still need youth at the OLB position and Cushing gives them exactly that. Cushing is a bit of a work out warrior himself but comes from a great program.
some text 24. Atlanta Falcons
Oher, Michael – OT – Mississippi
The Falcons GM gets a steal at the end of the first. Oher is a very physical player who should fit well w/ Atlanta’s aggressive run attack.
some text 25. Miami Dolphins
Nicks, Hakeem – WR – UNC
The Dolphins need some more talent on the offense and Nicks could give the Phins a larger possesion receiver. Miami needs more weapons, so I could see this being a nice match.
some text 26. Baltimore Ravens
Smith, Sean – CB/S – Utah
The Ravens are hurting in the secondary. Smith has terrific size, speed, and instincts. The Ravens need to infuse some youth into their defense and Smith’s freakish abilities are a great addition.
some text 27. Indianapolis Colts
Hood, Evander – DT – Missouri
The Colts have a strong need for more bulk up front and Ziggy Hood should give the Colts much needed help on Defense. They’re not afraid to reach.
some text 28. Buffalo Bills
Britton, Eben – OL – Arizona
This Mammoth-sized tackle is impressing scouts and is seeing his stock rise. The Eagles stole Jason Peters.
some text 29. NewYork Giants
Kenny Britt – WR – Rutgers
The Giants need to find an answer for Eli Manning and the offense because teams know they can’t move the ball through the air without a tall deep threat. Britt has the ability to be a great #1 WR.
some text 30. Tennessee Titans
Unger, Max – OL – Oregon
Quality selection by the Titans, just as Kevin Mawae is starting to fade, Unger enters to take up the reins and can fill in at multiple positions on the line.
some text 31. Arizona Cardinals
English, Larry – DE – Northern Illinois
The Cards are looking for a “Joey Porter” type to rush the passer and stuff the run. This hybrid DE/OLB from Nothern Illinois has a great knack for getting to the quarterback.
some text 32. Pittsburgh Steelers
Mack, Alex – OL – California
The Steelers need to keep defenders off of Roethlisberger’s back. Mack is a tough, disciplined, and tenacious blocker who fits the Steelers Mold.
